Sittin' poolside with the hot sun beating down on you (don't forget to use sunscreen!) and a refreshing Smash in your hand to cool you down... That is the life!
A Smash is not technically a well-defined catagory in cocktails, but who cares? It tastes great and it's a fantastic opportunity to think outside the Maguerita box.
And as always, you can make the Blueberry Orange Smash for adults AND kids (just leave out the gin for the kiddos) and you'll please everybody! Try it out for a holiday gathering. Or just try it out because you feel like it!
What you'll need for this drink recipe:
- 1/2 cup fresh Blueberries
- 5 Mint leaves
- 2 oz. Vodka
- 1 oz. Triple Sec/Orange liqueur
- 1/2 oz. Lime juice
- Twist of orange peel
What to do:
Put the blueberries and mint in a cocktail shaker and with a muddler, crush until you can't crush anymore. The longer you muddle, the darker the resulting beverage will be. (Blueberry juice, like grapes is yellowish, and all the color comes from pressing the skin.)
Add the vodka, liqueur, lime, ice, and shake and strain. You can pass this through a filter if you want a less pulpy texture, but as Benito says, "I like all the little bits of fruit and herb. It's a reminder that you used fresh ingredients."
Garnish with blueberries and an orange peel on a toothpick for fun!
